Description
Nutmeg is a tropical evergreen tree that grows up to 24 metres. The tree does not bear fruit until it is about seven or eight years old. These trees are either male or female. Usually there is one male per ten to twelve female trees in plantations with the result that they are known as harem trees. The tree produces yellowish flowers, which are followed by large yellow apricot or plum like fruits. When they split open they reveal the black seed (the nutmeg) wrapped in its red lacy aril (the mace). Both spices are dried separately.
